Application of OR methods in water resource management in Australia

In this presentation I will discuss three projects which apply OR methods for solving practical problems of natural resource management. Firstly, I will discuss the use of nonlinear programming for modelling water allocation in large irrigation regions. I will show how these models can be used for assessing the consequences of infrastructural, land use and climate changes in the region of the Goulburn irrigation system in the Murray-Darling Basin. Secondly, I will explain the integration of water allocation and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) macroeconomic models. Finally, I will present an example of game theoretic model which is used for managing optimal fertilizer application and reducing the upstream impacts to water quality in coastal areas.
