Fall 2000
General Information
-
Attendance: Regular attendance is essential and
will be informally monitored. In severe weather, you can monitor WCTC
AM 1450 or Rutgers INFO AM 530 for possible university
closing information.
-
Questions: Are strongly encouraged during class
and office hours.
-
Exams: There will be two in-class midterm
exams and a final. All exams will be closed book. For the midterms, you
can bring a one-page "cram sheet" in your own handwriting (both sides of
the paper are allowed). A two-page cram sheet (also in your own handwriting,
both sides of the paper allowed) is permitted for the final. All sections
of this course will have a common final exam, given in the "J" common exam
period (Wednesday, Dec 20, 4:00-7:00PM). Please figure out your final
exam schedule NOW to avoid conflicts. If there is any conflict
involving this class, please notify me IMMEDIATELY. The final distribution
of letter grades will depend on the section's final exam performance, as
compared to other sections. The final will be "cumulative", covering all
topics in the course.
-
Homework: There will be about 10 homework assignments.
There is no credit for late homework Your lowest assignment score will
be dropped, so your semester homework grade will be based on your best
9 scores. Most homework problems will involve computer work.
-
Collaboration: You are allowed to seek or give
help to other students on homework assignments. However, unless I instruct
otherwise, you must actually work through each problem yourself and hand
in your own work. Multiple students handing in copies of identical
computer printouts is not permitted. If you have worked with others
on an assignment, list them all on the first page of your assignment.
-
Computer Lab: All software needed for this
course is installed in the computer lab in the Levin building basement.
-
Using non-lab computers: Most computer
homework for this class may be done at the general University cluster sites,
which are open later than the Levin lab, and have newer, faster computers.
If Solver does not appear on the Excel Tools menu,
uou may have to use the Add-Ins dialog box (also accessible from
the Tools menu) to enable it. If it has Excel and the Solver
add-in installed, you can also use your own computer instead of the lab
machines. However, all software installation and compatibility problems
are strictly your own responsibility.
If your computer uses a different operating system than the lab, or a different
version of Excel, it is your responsibility to figure out the differences.
-
Solver Upgrade: The textbook comes with
an upgraded version of Solver, which should fix some minor but annoying
bugs that we have encountered in the past. You are encouraged
to try the upgraded solver on your own computer, if you have one.
-
Grading: No letter grades are assigned to individual
assignments or exams, only numeric scores from 0 to 100. Your course grade
will be based on your aggregate score, calculated by combining your scores
on all written class work according to the following weights (the exact
weights will be announced next week):
-
Midterm 1: 25%
-
Midterm 2: 25%
-
Final:
30%
-
Homework 20%
(excluding your worst score)
After getting the aggregate score, students are ranked and assigned letter
grades based on rank. Do not make assumptions on your grade based on homework
scores alone.
