QUEUEING APPLICATIONS OF THE SUM David Jagerman RUTCOR-Rutgers University Center for Operations Research ABSTRACT The sum of a function is introduced. This is a particular generalization of the Riemann integral which facilitates the summation of series, the solution of difference equations of continuous argument and certain types of functional equations. It is very useful in the solution of many queueing problems. Examples are given of series summation. The solutions of the linear first order homogeneous and inhomogeneous difference equations are obtained. Application is made to the solution of two non-trivial queueing problems.
