A LARGE DEVIATION APPROACH TO QUEUEING Dr. David Jagerman Rutcor-Rutgers University Center for Operations Research ABSTRACT A simple development is presented leading to the determination of the critical decrement for number in system for a class of G/G/1 queues. An explicit approximation for the equilibrium distribution of number in system is obtained for the GI/G/1 queue. These methods also extend to approximation of waiting time. Application to industrial engineering problems are manifold; in particular, application has been made to the arrival of ships to a bulk port.
