These electronic web-pages contain the program, the abstracts of talks and the electronic proceedings of The Fifth International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics, held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during 4-6 January 1998. These 57 abstracts -- which include 26 submitted papers, 27 papers in 9 invited sessions and 4 invited plenary presentations -- represent the state of the art in a variety of fields in the intersection of artificial intelligence and mathematics, including

We also include 37 papers, which extend a subset of these abstracts.

Altogether, we received submissions from 14 foreign countries (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Latvia, Portugal, North Korea, Slovak Republic, South Korean, United Kingdom, Vienna) as well as 7 states in the US (CA, PA, NJ, NY, VA, WI ) .    We were delighted by the number of world-class researchers who submitted their first-rate results, and who agreed to organize special sessions.

We are also pleased the following four major scholars accepted our invitation to present invited plenary lectures:

Finally, we would like to thank Alex Kogan, for his help in publicizing this symposium, and the 40 members of the program committee (representing 9 states in the US and 13 other countries, in 6 continents) for helping to maintain the high standards of this symposium, by providing informative, and timely, suggestions and reviews; and also the 8 people who organized the 9 invited sessions, covering 7 topics.
