Born (Nov. 6, 1933) in Rio de Janeiro
, Brazil
, I grew up in Zichron Yaakov
, a
Israeli
village famous for its wine (sold under the
Carmel
brand).
My wife Yoki
is an artist (sculpture & jewelry). We have a daughter, Eris
,and a son, Yermi
.
I studied Mechanical Engineering (B.Sc. & Diploma, 1955)and
Operations Research & Statistics (M.Sc. 1959) at the
Technion
-Israel Institute of Technology, and Engineering Science: Applied
Mathematics (Ph.D. 1962) at Northwestern
University
.
At Rutgers University since 1988. Before that I was a faculty memberat
the University of Delaware
(Math., 1976-1988), Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (Appl. Math.,
1970-1975) and Northwestern University (Engrg. Sci. & Indust. Engrg.,
1965-1970). I also worked as an engineer.
I had great teachers: Paul Naor (Technion) and
Abraham Charnes
(Northwestern Univ.); both gone and badly missed.
I was also fortunate to have excellent students, including:
- Prof. Robert Abrams
, Information & Decision Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago
- Prof.
Ronny Ben-Tal
, Industrial Engineering & Management, Technion, Israel
- Prof. Avi Berman,
Mathematics
,Technion, Israel
- Prof. Yair Censor
, Mathematics, University of Haifa, Israel
- Prof. Sjur
Flåm
, Economics, University of Bergen, Norway
- Dr. Matthias Kramp, Procter & Gamble, Frankfurt, Germany
- Dr. Malini Krishnamurti, Eastman-Kodak, Rochester, NY
- Prof. Yuri Levin
, Rutgers Univ., NJ
- Dr. Jianming Miao, ATT, NJ
- Prof.
Prabha Sharma
, Mathematics, Indian Instititute of Technology, Kanpur, India
- Dr. Xueqing Tang, IBM, Naperville, IL
- Prof. Sanjo Zlobec, Mathematics
, McGill University, Montreal, Canada
- Dr. Fuan Zhao, Instinet, New York
Despite what they learned, they are doing well and we even remained friends.
